Home Remedies for Eliminating Cat Odor

You may love your cat to pieces, but if she makes a mistake somewhere or has gotten into the habit of spraying, odor can become a big issue. If you notice that your cat a has recently sprayed or made a mistake, time is of the essence to get rid of the odor so it does not remain in the house. Fortunately, there are many products around your house that you can use to dissolve and eliminate cat odor.
  1. Vinegar

    • Vinegar is the most potent home remedy, although it can leave a strong smell behind for a few hours. Once you have cleaned the stain with household cleaner, simply apply a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then wipe it clean with regular water. The vinegar smell will be pungent for awhile, but when it goes, so will the odor.

    Bleach

    • Bleach is another viable alternative if your cat has sprayed on the wall. You can use a 50/50 bleach solution to both clean and remove odor with one simple treatment. However, bleach should not be used if you have painted or wallpapered walls. Do not leave the bleach on the walls for an extended period of time. Instead, just apply a small amount of the solution to the stain and then gently rub away.

    Hydrogen Peroxide

    • If the cat has sprayed on the carpet, after you clean the stain, pour a liberal amount of hydrogen peroxide on the spot where the odor originally came from. The peroxide will fizz for awhile, but once it is finished, the odor should start to disappear. For more pungent odors, a second or third application may be required.

    Baking Soda

    • Combine baking soda with a small amount of water to form a thick paste. Then apply to the clean area from which the odor is emanating. Scrub the solution into that area and leave the baking soda paste there for no more than 15 minutes. Then use a clean rag or sponge to remove the paste from the area.

    Soda Water

    • Soda water works in the same way as peroxide. Simply pour several applications over the affected area, wait for the fizz and then remove. However, soda water is not as immediately effective as peroxide, and several applications may be necessary. Use unflavored soda water so no bugs or creatures are attracted to any sugary compounds.
