How to Remove Cat Hair From Carpet

Cat hair can be one of the most difficult things to remove from a carpet. The thin texture of cat hair makes it easy for the hair to filter through the top of the carpet strands toward the floor below. Once this happens, it is more difficult to remove the hair. Using a normal vacuum may have little effect on cat hair, but there are several other methods to try that will have a far better effect.

Use a rubber broom to get the cat hairs out of the fibers of the carpet. Rubber brooms have short, rubber bristles. They clean the cat hair from the carpet by using static electricity to attract the hairs to the broom. This lifts the hairs out of the carpet rather than pushing them deeper into the pile.

Clean the carpet with a rubber glove if you don't have access to a rubber broom. A rubber glove can work in a similar fashion, though it will take longer and it will be more difficult physically. To use this method, put on a thick rubber glove and rub your hand over the carpet over and over again, gathering hairs to the glove each time. Once hair has collected on the glove, remove it and go over the carpet again. Continue this until there are no more hairs left.

Get a Dyson Animal (see Resources below). This is a vacuum cleaner specifically created for removing pet hair from carpet. While other vacuums may pick up a few surface hairs, the Dyson Animal cleans deep into the carpet to remove cat hair from between the fibers.

Wet a large, clean kitchen sponge with a small amount of water. Use it in the same way as the rubber glove. Rub it back and forth across the carpet until the sponge begins to pick up hair. The dampness of the sponge will make some of the hairs stick to it. Remove the hair from the sponge often to avoid driving those hairs deeper into the carpet.
