How to get the smell of cat pee out of your carpet

The strong, distinctive smell of cat urine is not something that most people want to have in their homes. If you have a cat that is not yet litter-box trained or is simply stubborn and likes to do things its own way, you may occasionally discover that the cat has urinated on your carpet. As a general rule, the more quickly you are able to find the urine stain and begin treating it, the less work it will take to get rid of the odor.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak up as much urine as possible if the stain is still wet. Place paper towels over the area and weigh them down with heavy objects or by standing on them. If the urine soaks through the towels, replace them with new ones and repeat the process until the area is dry.

    • 2

Spray the area with carpet cleaner or a solution consisting of water mixed with three to five drops of dishwashing soap. Saturate the entire stained area and allow the solution to sit for at least an hour before blotting it up with paper towels. Go over the area with a wet sponge to rinse it, then blot again.

    • 3

Allow the area to dry completely, which may take two to three days. If you notice that the smell of urine is still there after the area has dried, spray an enzymatic cleaner according to the instructions on the bottle. This type of cleaner is made to eliminate urine smells and can be purchased from a local grocery or pet store.

Repeat the enzymatic cleaner treatment multiple times if the urine odor persists. If the odor is particularly bad and doesn't seem to be going away, you may have to lift up the carpet to replace the padding and clean the floor underneath.
