How to Eliminate Cat Urine Odor

Eliminating cat urine odor is essential for preventing your cats from spraying the area again, as well as keeping your home people-friendly. With a keen nose and a few basic household products, you can safely and effectively eliminate cat urine odors.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the spot where your cat urinated as soon as possible. You want to discover the area quickly so that your cat doesn't become a repeat offender. If the odor penetrates too deeply, it can be harder to remove.

    • 2

Remove as much urine as possible from the area using paper towels. Keep your cat away from this area during the entire cleaning process so that your animal doesn't want to continue marking this spot.

    • 3

Mix together a solution of warm water, dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide, and sprinkle the mixture over the affected area. Always do a test patch to make sure this mixture won't damage or disfigure the area of your home.

    • 4

Use a rag to rub the mixture into the area, penetrating the entire patch emitting the cat's urine odor. Once you've thoroughly washed the area, cover it with a dry towel and continue to keep your cat closed off from this spot.

    • 5

Sprinkle the area with baking soda when it dries to remove any additional odors. Repeat this process as many times as necessary to eliminate the urine odor. Be persistent, as cat urine has a lingering smell and can be hard to remove once it sets in.

    • 6

Cover the area with aluminum foil to prevent your cat from urinating on the spot again. Cats are drawn to the scent of their own urine and continue to use the same areas once they've marked territory. They dislike the foil's texture and are less likely to urinate on that surface.

    • 7

Keep your cat's litter box clean to prevent this issue from happening in the first place, and if your cat becomes a repeat offender, check in with your veterinarian.
