  Decide what you want: Do you want a vocal or a quiet cat? While this can sometimes be difficult to determine, there are certain breeds which are more vocal than others. Vocal breeds including the Siamese, Korat and Burmese. Quieter breeds include the Scottish Fold, Somali and American Curl.

  Determine which personality suits you and your family. Do you want a cat that will cuddle or be independent? If you have a lot of free time or children then you should probably choose a cat that will cuddle. If you don't have a lot of free time and just want a companion then you should choose a cat that is more independent.

  Decide whether you want a short haired or a long haired cat. Are you averse to cleaning up the cat's fur, which will coat everything you own? Do you want to spend time daily grooming a long haired cat? Would you prefer a lower maintenance cat?

  Consider a purebred cat but you need to take into account the genetic defects that are common with the breed. Some genetic disorders can lead to life threatening medical conditions.

  Do you want a cat or kitten. Kittens can be irresistible, but they also require a lot of care and attention. Do you want to take your time and energy to work with a kitten or is a cat the better option for you?

  Research: When it comes time to get your pet it's a good idea to research your breeder before purchasing or, even better, get your pet from the local humane society. When you go to check out a cat, be sure to take some toys along with you and spend some time with the cat. Observe how she interacts with you. This will help you to make the best choice.
