Can millipedes harm dogs and cats?

While millipedes are not venomous or poisonous to mammals such as dogs and cats, they can secrete a fluid as a defense mechanism that acts as an irritant. If ingested in large quantities or if it comes into contact with the eyes, it can cause temporary discomfort, excessive drooling, nausea, or skin irritation.

In most cases, however, a single exposure to millipedes does not pose a serious health risk to your pets. If you observe your pet eating or coming into contact with millipedes, monitor their behavior and check for any unusual symptoms. If you think they may have consumed a large number or are showing signs of irritation, contact your veterinarian.
