Instructions
Purchase a variety of scratching posts to determine which ones your kitten prefers. Choose vertical, horizontal and slanted scratching posts made from sisal, upholstery, carpet, cardboard or wood. Look for sturdy posts that can be attached to the floor or have a large, heavy base and won't fall over.
Place the scratching posts in front of areas that your kitten likes to scratch. Use horizontal or slanted scratching posts if your kitten scratches the carpet, and vertical posts if your kitten's preferred scratching sites are the legs of tables, couches or door frames.
Attach a cat toy to the scratching posts with a piece of string. The toy may help attract your kitten to the post. As an alternative, rub one teaspoon of catnip powder into the scratching post to entice your kitten.
Spray a commercial cat deterrent on furniture that your kitten likes to scratch. The scent of the spray is unpleasant to your kitten and will discourage it from scratching. As an alternative, cover the preferred scratching area with double-sided sticky tape or aluminum foil.
Clap your hands or spray water on your kitten to startle it when you catch it scratching areas that are off-limits. Use this tactic only when you catch your kitten in the moment, as disciplining your kitten after the fact will not get the message across.
Scratch the scratching post with a fork to set the right example for your kitten. The scratching sound alone may motivate your kitten to copy your behavior.
Praise your kitten when it uses the new scratching posts. Use treats, kind words and petting as rewards.
