How do cats get worms?

Cats can get worms in a few different ways:

Ingestion of infected prey:

* Roundworms: Cats can get roundworms by eating infected rodents, birds, or other small animals. The larvae of roundworms live in the intestines of these animals and are passed in their feces. When a cat eats an infected animal, the larvae can mature into adult worms in their intestines.

* Tapeworms: Cats get tapeworms by ingesting fleas that carry tapeworm larvae. When a cat grooms itself and ingests a flea, the tapeworm larva attaches to the cat's intestines and develops into an adult worm.

Contact with infected feces:

* Roundworms: Roundworm eggs can survive in the environment for a long time. If a cat comes into contact with soil or feces that contains roundworm eggs, they can become infected by licking their paws or ingesting the eggs.

* Hookworms: Hookworm larvae can penetrate the skin of cats, especially when they walk on contaminated soil. They can also be ingested if a cat eats contaminated food or water.

Other ways:

* Toxoplasmosis: This is a parasitic infection that can be spread through contaminated food or water. Cats can also become infected through contact with infected feces.

* Heartworm: Heartworm is a parasitic worm that lives in the heart and lungs of dogs. Cats can get heartworm by being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Symptoms of worms in cats:

* Weight loss: Worms can steal nutrients from the cat's body.

* Diarrhea or constipation: Worms can irritate the intestines and cause problems with digestion.

* Vomiting: Some worms can cause vomiting, especially if they are blocking the intestines.

* Dull coat: Worms can cause a cat's coat to become dull and dry.

* Abdominal swelling: Worms can cause the abdomen to swell.

* Coughing: Worms in the lungs can cause coughing.

* Weakness and lethargy: Worms can make a cat feel weak and tired.

Preventing worms in cats:

* Regular deworming: Talk to your vet about deworming your cat based on their age, lifestyle, and risk factors.

* Keep your cat's environment clean: Regularly clean their litter box, wash their bedding, and disinfect their food and water bowls.

* Prevent flea infestations: Fleas can carry tapeworms, so it's important to prevent fleas on your cat.

* Don't feed your cat raw meat: Raw meat can contain parasites that can infect your cat.

* Wash your hands after handling your cat's feces: This will help prevent the spread of parasites to you and other pets.

If you suspect your cat has worms, it's important to take them to the vet for diagnosis and treatment.
