Friskies Indoor Cat Food Ingredients

Friskies Selects Indoor Cat Food comes in six varieties, featuring various combinations of chicken, seafood and turkey. Although each variety has some unique ingredients, there are also ingredients common to all six types of cat food.

All the Friskies Selects Indoor Cat Food contain chicken, meat by-products, liver, spinach, and brown or white rice, as well as various vitamins, minerals, flavorings, preservatives and food colors. Most contain wheat gluten, and some contain substances like guar gum, carrageenan, and xanthan gum for texture.
  1. Common Ingredients

    • All the Friskies Selects Indoor Cat Foods contain water, chicken, meat by-products, liver, corn bran, artificial and natural flavors, spinach, calcium phosphate, added color, potassium chloride, choline chloride, taurine, salt, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, niacin, calcium pantothenate, vitamin A supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, copper sulfate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, vitamin B-12 supplement, biotin, folic acid, vitamin D-3 supplement and potassium iodide.

The amounts of each ingredient varies, depending on the type of cat food.

    Chunky Chicken and Turkey Casserole

    • In addition to the common ingredients, the Chunky Chicken and Turkey Casserole flavor includes wheat gluten, turkey, corn starch-modified, brown rice, soy flour and xanthan gum.

While the flavor is called "chicken and turkey," according to the label, the recipe actually includes more meat by-products and liver than turkey. Wheat gluten, cornstarch, and xanthan gum are included for texture and as thickening agents. Soy flour adds protein.

    Classic Chicken Entree

    • The Friskies Classic Chicken Entree includes brown rice, guar gum, and carrageenan, DL-Methionine, in addition to the common ingredients. The guar gum and carrageenan are stabilizers, which thicken and provide texture to the food. They are also used as fat replacements. DL-Methionine is an essential amino acid that is added to cat food to acidify the cat's urine and reduce the likelihood that they will develop urinary disorders. Cat foods that contain a high percentage of protein from natural meat sources do not need DL-Methionine supplementation.

    Flaked Ocean Whitefish Dinner

    • The Flaked Ocean Whitefish Dinner contains ocean whitefish, wheat gluten, brown rice, corn starch-modified and soy flour in addition to the common ingredients. Ocean whitefish, or "Caulolatilus princeps," are found off the coast from Peru to British Columbia, although most are found south of central California. Ocean whitefish are bottom-feeders who dig into the ocean floor for food.

    Herbed Salmon Entree

    • Friskie's Herbed Salmon Entree features salmon, rice, guar gum, parsley, added color, carrageenan, and DL-Methionine in addition to the common ingredients. Most of the Friskie's Indoor Select Cat Foods contain rice; this is the only variety which does not specify brown rice, so it may contain either brown or processed white rice.

    Homestyle Turkey Dinner

    • Friskies' Homestyle Turkey Dinner includes turkey, wheat gluten, corn starch-modified, chicken, corn oil, and DL-Methionine, in addition to the common ingredients.

    Saucy Seafood Bake

    • Friskies Saucy Seafood Bake includes sardines, wheat gluten, ocean whitefish, corn starch-modified, brown rice, chicken by-products and soy flour in addition to the common ingredients. The food contains more sardines than whitefish, and chicken by-products are added for additional protein.
