How to Store Dry Cat Food

Properly storing your cat's food is essential to maintaining the food's taste and freshness. Wet food can be stored in most places in the home because it comes in cans or packets, but dry kibble can be a challenge to store. Leaving a bag of cat food open may cause it to become damp or stale. Some people choose to store their cat's food in containers designed especially for the purpose, but any container with an airtight seal will serve the same function.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a container large enough to store as much cat food as your pet will eat between trips to the store. If you prefer to buy food in bulk, use multiple containers, such as several large Mason jars. A container with an airtight seal will keep the moisture out.

    • 2

Wash the container with dish washing soap and hot water, rinse it well and allow it to dry thoroughly. If the container is too large to fit in a dish drainer, allow it to dry upside down in a place where air can reach the inside.

    • 3

Turn the container right side up and open the bag of cat food.

    • 4

Pour the dry food into the container or put the entire opened bag into the container with the food still in it.

    • 5

Put the lid on the container, making sure the airtight seal is firmly secured all the way around. Store the food in a cool, dry place away from where human food is prepared.
