How to Add Fiber to a Cat's Diet

Just like humans, cats can become constipated for various health reasons. Adding fiber to your cat's diet will not only help with constipation, it will also help to make it feel fuller, which may help with issues like obesity and digestive issues. Commercial cat foods may not have enough fiber to meet your cat's needs. Fortunately, adding fiber to your cat's diet is easy to do and your pet will thank you for it.

Get your cat checked out by a veterinarian to evaluate his health. Do not add fiber to your cat's diet without first checking with a vet. Your cat may have underlying health issues that will need to be addressed.

    • 2

Add fiber to your cat's diet in a gradual manner. Begin slowly with a reduced amount and gradually build to the total recommended amount over a period of seven days.

    • 3

Mix 1 tsp. of bran or psyllium into your cat's food, once each day. Try out each of these fiber options on separate occasions to determine which your cat will tolerate. The animal may show a preference.

    • 4

Mix 1 tsp. of pureed pumpkin into your cat's food, twice each day. Some cats may find the bran or psyillium to be intolerable but the canned pumpkin tends to be enjoyed.

Find a fiber supplement that works well for your cat. Mix it thoroughly into your pet's food so the cat can't taste it too strongly. Continue supplementing your cat's diet until the issue has been resolved or until your vet recommends against it.
