How to Make Dry Cat & Dog Food

Preparing your own dog or cat food can ensure that your pet gets the nutritional requirements it needs. Recipes abound for wet or moist dog or cat food, but if you don't have the time to spend on daily preparation of your pet's diet, a homemade dry food is the way to go.

Things You'll Need

  • For dog food---
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup applesauce
  • 1 tablespoon brewers yeast
  • 1 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1 cup mashed or grated vegetables (such as carrots)
  • 1 bowl
  • 1 spoon
  • 1 baking tray
  • For cat food---
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 cups soy flour
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk
  • ½ cup brewer's yeast
  • 1 15 oz. can mackerel, mashed
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon cod liver oil
  • 2 cups of water (approximate)
  • 2 mixing bowls
  • 1 pizza cutter

  1. Dry Dog Food

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

      Combine all of the ingredients in the bowl. Using the spoon, mix well.

      Drop by tablespoons onto a greased cookie sheet.

      Bake for about 12 minutes. Allow to cool before serving as a treat or as part of your dog's regular food.

    Dry Cat Food

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

      Mix all the dry ingredients in one of the mixing bowls. In the other mixing bowl, combine the oil, mackerel and water.

      Combine the dry and wet mixtures together. The dough should be tough; you may have to mix it with your hands.

      Roll the dough out until it is ¼-inch thick and cut it into ¼-inch pieces with a pizza cutter. Spread out the pieces on a greased cookie sheet; it's all right if they overlap.

      Bake for 25 minutes, tossing with a spoon a few times during the baking. Let the food cool before serving.
