Nutritional Facts on Dry Cat Food

Dry cat food should not be the only thing you are feeding your feline. Dry food contains fillers and additives that your cat cannot process which can lead to obesity and other health issues.
  1. Nutrients Contained in Dry Food

    • According to veterinarian Lisa Pierson, dry cat food is composed mainly of grain and meat by-products. She and Michelle Bernard of Blakkatz Cattery warn of lines that claim to be organic and natural. It usually means they added more herbs, fruits, and vegetables into the food that are not beneficial for your cat. Your cat is a carnivore and should be eating meat and drinking water, instead of plant proteins or carbohydrates. Don't allow manufacturers to fool you into thinking they need the nutrients humans do.

What to look for if you have to buy dry food

    • If you must buy dry food, make sure it has meat listed as the primary ingredient. Grains should not be listed within the first three ingredients listed and keep kitty away from corn or wheat as many felines are allergic to these two carbohydrates. If you don't understand what some of the listed ingredients are, or the list is huge, it may be a good idea of a food to avoid.

What food to feet your cat

    • Feed your cat wet food. You may need to mix the two types of food to get your cat to switch at first but wet food contains a higher amount of animal protein and a larger amount of water which will keep your pet healthier.
