How to Cook Food for Cats

Much commercially prepared cat food is not only expensive but also full of preservatives and fillers. If your cat is a finicky eater or has health problems, or if you just want to give your pet a wholesome meal, try cooking homemade cat food. You may need to experiment to find a recipe your cat enjoys, and then you should make it routinely, rather than changing recipes, to avoid upsetting the cat's stomach. According to veterinarian Dr. Tracy Lord, on her website VetLord, homemade cat food should provide a daily diet of four parts protein to one or two parts carbohydrates.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose proteins, such as one medium egg, 2 ounces of meat or fish, 2 ounces of organ meat, 1/2 cup of yogurt or 1/3 cup of cottage cheese. Keep in mind that the yogurt and cottage cheese also count as a carbohydrate serving. These are all equal to one unit of protein.

    • 2

Select carbohydrates, such as 1/2 cup fruit; 1 cup vegetables; 1/2 cup cooked beans, chickpeas or lentils; or 1 cup grains, such as oatmeal or barley. These are equal to one unit of carbohydrate.

    • 3

Blend or chop raw vegetables finely, in order to break down the cell walls and make them more easily digestible.

    • 4

Lightly cook the ingredients in a pan on the stove, or mix the raw ingredients in a blender.

    • 5

Add supplements to your homemade cat food. Consult your veterinarian to find out which supplements will benefit your cat. According to Dr. Lord, some beneficial supplements are 50 to 100 mg of taurine, 1/2 teaspoon of bonemeal, 500 to 1,000 mg of fish oil and a multivitamin for cats.
