How to Feed a Feline With Diabetes

Diet is an important aspect of treatment for feline diabetes. Most cats respond well to a low-carbohydrate, high-protein cat food. Since dry cat foods are high in carbohydrates, canned cat food is the recommended feeding choice. For many cats, a change in diet is all that is required for remission of their diabetes. In other cats, the amount of insulin required will decrease significantly because of dietary change.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a canned cat food that has less than 10 percent of calories from carbohydrates.

    • 2

Transition to canned food slowly if you currently feed dry food to the cat. Mix the canned food with the cat's current dry food over a course of seven to 10 days. Gradually increase the amount of canned food while decreasing the amount of dry food given.

Determine how much canned food to give the cat each day by reading the feeding instructions on the label of the canned food.

    • 4

Feed the cat half of the recommended daily amount at a consistently timed morning meal.

    • 5

Feed the cat the remaining half of the daily amount at a consistently timed evening meal.

    • 6

Provide the cat with plenty of fresh water to drink throughout the day.
