How to Start Feeding a Kitten Adult Cat Food

Knowing when and how to feed your kitten adult food can be a great concern. You have the choice of letting your cat ̶0;graze̶1; or feeding it at certain times during the day. You also can choose to only allow your cat canned food, dry food or both. You will find differing opinions online on which is the best way to feed your cat; consult your cat̵7;s veterinarian on feeding practices.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the cat has reached the appropriate age. Cats should eat kitten food until they are one year old.

    • 2

Feed the cat the amount of food that is appropriate for its age and weight, if you feed the animal at certain times during the day. If you feed your cat only at certain times, feed it one to two times a day. Use the package of food as a guideline for how much you should be feeding your cat.

You may let your cat ̶0;graze,̶1; or eat whenever it wants throughout the day. Feeding it at certain times during the day versus deciding to let it "graze" depends on the cat. If the cat tends to eat too much, you may want to cut back and feed it at certain times, but if it can eat a little bit at a time it will be OK to allow it to "graze."

Mix the food. Cats̵7; stomachs are sensitive. Get them adjusted to the food slowly by feeding them one-quarter adult food and three-quarters kitten food for a few days, then half and half and so on until it is all adult food.

Choose canned, dry or both. If you let your cat ̶0;graze,̶1; you obviously would choose dry food. Some people who like to feed their cats at only certain times may choose to use dry food, canned food or change it up occasionally. Some also may choose to have dry food out all the time for the cat to ̶0;graze,̶1; as well as feeding the cat once or twice a day with canned food. It all depends on how you, personally, want to feed your cat, what your veterinarian recommends and the weight/lifestyle of the cat.
