Single-Protein Cat Foods

It used to be that single-protein cat foods were available only as prescription diets. That's changed, though, and now cats who don't have special nutritional needs can also enjoy single protein-source canned food. Most independent and online pet supply retailers sell canned cat food with just one protein. Feeding your cat a variety of flavors and brands will help prevent food sensitivities.

  1. Avoderm Natural Select Cuts

    • Made by Breeder's Choice, Avoderm Select Cuts Chicken Chunks contains chicken with chicken broth gravy. Other flavors include Tuna and Crab Meat (tuna, tuna broth and crab) and Sardine, Shrimp and Crab Meat (sardine, fish broth, shrimp and crab meat).

    Nature's Logic

    • Nature's Logic uses nutrient-dense organ and muscle meat in its chicken and rabbit dinners. The only other protein besides the named meat is egg product.

    • The Turkey and Turkey Liver and Chicken and Chicken Liver flavors derive all of their protein from the named meats. By Nature Organics makes other flavors that combine protein sources.

    Wysong Au Jus

    • Wysong's Au Jus flavors are 95 percent meat, and the named meat is the only protein source. This food can be fed to both cats and dogs.

    Innova Evo 95% Meat

    • Evo's 95 percent meat formulas include bones, fat, cartilage and connective tissue. All provide important nutrients for cats. The named meat is the only source of protein.

    Before Grain

    • Before Grain's canned foods contain just the named meat and no other ingredients. They don't provide a complete and balanced diet for a cat and, the manufacturer says, should be used "for supplemental feeding only."

    Weruva

    • Some Weruva flavors contain just one protein source, such as chicken or tuna. Some others combine two kinds of fish. Check the labels on the cans for ingredients.

    Solid Gold Gourmet Blended Tuna

    • These large, "chewable" chunks of red and white tuna in tapioca gravy come in 3- and 6-ounce cans.

    Tiki Cat

    • Some of Tiki Cat's flavors contain just tuna or chicken as the source of protein. Some others combine two kinds of fish. Check the labels on the cans for ingredients.

    Blue Buffalo Wilderness

    • The only protein sources in Blue Buffalo's Wilderness High Protein Chicken and High Protein Turkey are the named meats.

    Soulistic

    • Soulistic, PetCo's private label brand, includes some flavors that have just tuna or chicken as their source of protein. Some others combine two kinds of fish. Check the labels on the cans for the ingredients.
