Dr. Strombeck's Egg Diet Recipes
-
Dr. Donald Strombeck has come up with a few recipes involving eggs which are lower protein diets for kitties with kidney disease. In the basic egg diet, take two large, hard-boiled eggs and mix with 1/2 ounce of canned, chopped clams in juice. Add to this a tablespoon of chicken fat, 1/8 teaspoon salt substitute-potassium chloride, some calcium carbonate tablets, 1/4 multiple vitamin-mineral tablet that does not contain vitamins A or D, and 1/10 B-complex vitamin-trace mineral tablet.
Alternatively, the recipe can be made using only the whites of the hard boiled eggs and with the addition of long-grained, cooked rice. The recipe is basically the same and can use the whites from two or three hard-boiled eggs. It recommends adding in 1/2 to one cup of the cooked rice, along with the clams and other supplements.
Of course, the rice can also be added into the original recipe, in which both the white and yellow from the hard boiled eggs are used. Other variations include using up to one ounce of clams. The best amount to use greatly depends on the size of the cat being fed.
The number of calories will vary, based on the number of eggs and whether you use rice or not. Likewise, the number of eggs used will affect the overall grams of protein. For the basic egg diet (with clams) there will be 16.7 grams of protein, 25 grams of fat, and 308 kilocalories. Adding in the rice to the basic egg diet increases the protein count to 18.8 grams, 25.2 grams of fat, and 411 kilocalories.

Egg Diet for Cats
Before considering any sort of special diet for your cat, be sure you have spoken with a veterinarian to make sure that the diet will meet your cat's needs. Special diets are often used because a cat has a particular condition, such as kidney disease, requiring a diet that is easier to digest. In that situation, the right diet can be very important.
