Food for Cats With Allergies

According to Pet Education, about 10 percent of allergies in cats and dogs are due to food allergies. In addition, food allergies are the cause of about 57 percent of scratching problems in cats.
    • Food allergies are a main cause of scratching problems in cats.

    Venison

    • Venison and potato or venison and peas is sometimes used as a hypoallergenic diet for cats. There are a number of brands available including Natural Balance, Innova EVO and Nature's Variety.

    Duck

    • Duck and peas is a good choice to offer as a trial diet for 12 weeks. Give your cat the same food--and nothing else--for 12 weeks, watching for improvement.

    Lamb

    • Diets that consist of lamb and rice have been used for cats with food allergies, although Marvistavet says the combination has recently been eliminated as an acceptable hypoallergenic diet.

    Homemade Diet

    • You may wish to feed your cat a homemade diet. You should consult your veterinarian to make sure you are feeding her an appropriate amount of food that includes all of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

    Hydrolyzed Protein

    • According to Marvistavet, a new approach is to use a diet of hydrolyzed proteins, which includes proteins that are reduced to small molecules that do not trigger your cat's immune system.
