How to Make Cat Dry Food or Kibble

When it comes to palettes, none is more difficult to please than that of a cat. A well-honed sense of taste means felines can easily detect food that is less than fresh. Faced with the fussiest of kitties, it seemed I was spending more on their food each week than my own. By learning how to make cat dry food, or kibble, I could rest assured that my cats' bellies were filled with wholesome, tasty food while keeping my food bill low. Things You'll Need

  • 3 c. wholewheat organic flour
  • 2 c. soy flour
  • 1 c. wheatgerm
  • 1 c. cornmeal
  • 1 c. non-fat powdered milk
  • 1/2 c. brewers' yeast
  • 15 oz canned mackerel
  • 2 c. water
  • 5 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp. cod liver oil

Instructions

      Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

      Grease a cookie sheet.

      In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients (wholewheat and soy flours, wheatgerm, cornmeal, powdered milk and brewers' yeast).

      In a medium bowl mash together mackerel with oils and water.

      Turn wet ingredients into your dry mixture.

      Using your hands, mix well until a tough dough is formed.

      Turn dough out on a floured surface and roll until approximately 1/4" thick.

      Using a pizza cutter cut dough into 1/4" or smaller squares.

      Place squares onto cookie sheets and bake for 20-25 minutes until brown, remembering to turn every 5 - 10 minutes to ensure even cooking.

      Remove from oven and place on tea towel to cool.
