What Do Chihuahuas Like to Eat?

Since the average Chihuahua weighs only around 6 pounds, regardless of the dog's food preferences, it's important not to overfeed it. A Chihuahua that is only 6 ounces past its ideal weight is considered fat, which can lead to health problems for the dog. The small size of this breed is one of the most important factors to consider when determining a healthy diet.
  1. Flavors Dogs Like

    • Each dog is different and food preferences aren't determined by breed. However, according to Dr. Ron Rompala of By Nature Pet Foods there are four flavors that dogs can taste: bitter, sweet, salty and sour. In general dogs are drawn to meat flavors, which are salty. However dogs have been known to enjoy cheese, eggs, vegetables and all variety of treats and snack foods.

    Puppy Diet

    • Chihuahua puppies are active and energetic and require additional calories to nourish them through their growing phase. For these reasons, puppies require a diet that is high in protein and higher in calories than an adult dog. Puppies, like adult dogs, thrive on food that is nutrient dense, so be aware of labels and avoid fillers if feeding the dog a commercial brand. Another important consideration is the small size of the Chihuahua pup; when buying kibble, select food that offers smaller bites, so the food is easier for the puppy to chew and digest.

    Adult Diet

    • Some Chihuahuas remain exceedingly active, even as adults -- in some cases, these dogs do well on the more protein- and calorie-dense puppy foods. If the dog's activity level is not as intense, feed smaller quantities of commercial food throughout the day. Their digestive systems are delicate and can handle only small quantities. For adult dogs, a food that contains 30 to 33 percent protein is ideal.

    Treats

    • Although Chihuahuas don't think of themselves as small dogs, they are; it's important for the owner to remember that when giving treats, including table scraps. Keep the quantities small. If the dog received some meat or vegetable leftovers from its owner's meal, then a quantity of the dog's regular pet food meal should be deducted to accommodate this. Other than this consideration there is no reason why a Chihuahua can't enjoy small quantities of healthy organic dog biscuits, small bites of carrot or sweet potato, and roasted or grilled meats. Just remember that the treat should be cut into small bites, and the dog should not be overfed.

    Foods to Avoid

    • Some foods are toxic to dogs, regardless of the breed. Avoid feeding your Chihuahua chocolate -- the toxic effects of this are magnified because of the dog's small size. In addition, dogs should not be fed onions, garlic, grapes or raisins. If you have questions about foods that are safe for your Chihuahua, consult your veterinarian.
