Plastic Vs. Stainless Steel Dog Dishes

Although buying a dog dish may seem simple, the decision to choose between buying plastic or stainless steel actually involves a number of considerations. The convenience, safety, ruggedness and cost of dog dishes all vary depending upon the material used to manufacture them. Stainless steel dog dishes offer a metallic appearance, while manufactures produce plastic dishes in a range of colors. Both come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

  1. Durability

    • Dogs often treat their feeding dishes roughly, so look for durability. Some dogs -- especially puppies -- chew on anything made of plastic. Stainless steel proves much more difficult to chew on and doesn't break when dropped or when tossed by the wind. Although they can dent, stainless steel dishes usually don't crack or develop holes like plastic bowls can. Water freezing in plastic dog bowls left outside may cause them to crack.

    Safety

    • Plastic dishes have the potential to cause certain harmful health effects. An Environmental Working Group study from 2008 indicated that plastic dishes may leach toxins that disrupt hormones. Also, the Partnership for Animal Welfare warns that plastic bowls prove more vulnerable to bacteria growth. Scrapes and cavities that damage the plastic make them difficult to thoroughly clean. Boiling water helps sanitize stainless steel dishes without any risk of melting. However, steel bowls could cause greater injury if accidentally dropped on a dog or a human's foot.

    Expense

    • Although the cost for either type of dog bowl remains relatively low, the expense can add up over time, or when buying dishes for several dogs. Stainless steel bowls cost more to purchase than plastic versions of the same size. However, the greater durability of steel makes it easier to find used dishes in acceptable condition. They sometimes appear at garage sales, usually for no more than a few dollars. Most plastic feeding bowls cost very little to purchase new, especially at discount stores.

    Weight

    • Stainless steel dishes weigh more than plastic dog bowls. They require additional effort to pick up and move around. However, this makes it more difficult for dogs to tip them over and spill the food or water. It also reduces the chances of wind blowing the dishes around. Both types of dishes stay in place more effectively when they have a low profile. If purchased online or through a catalog, plastic bowls cost less to ship because of their lighter weight.
