How to Force Feed an Orphaned Puppy

There are a number of reasons that puppies are orphaned. First, their mother may not be able to produce milk, may die in the birthing process, or may simply decide to roam. Second, humans who failed to spay their dogs may not wish to care for the multiple puppies produced in an unexpected litter. Regardless of the reason for abandonment, if a puppy is orphaned during the first few weeks of life, it will need your educated assistance to survive. Force feeding is the most important rescue technique you need to learn in order to properly care for an orphaned puppy.

Instructions

  1. How to Force Feed a Puppy

    • 1

Heat bland puppy food in a pot over low heat, adding Pedialyte until the mixture is the consistency of soup. Fill the 35cc syringe with the mixture.

    • 2

Pull the side of the puppy's lip away from his teeth, and cup its cheek so that a small pouch forms between the teeth and gums.

    • 3

Slowly squirt the food mixture into the pouch, being careful not to squirt any of the liquid directly down the animal's throat. Press the side of the puppy's mouth gently back into place. The puppy will have no choice but to swallow the food mixture.

    • 4

Repeat steps 1-3 until the puppy has eaten between 50-70 cc of food. Feed the pup in this manner 2 to 3 times a day, until it is strong enough to begin eating for itself.
