How to Make a Puppy Burp

Raising a puppy from birth can be a difficult and often stressful task, but a necessary one if the mother has abandoned the puppy or is unable or unwilling to nurse. Similar to newborn babies, puppies who are bottle-fed often get gassy during the feeding and need to be burped to relieve the extra pressure and discomfort. After the first few successful attempts, you will get a hang of burping the puppy and be able to do it quickly and easily during each feeding.

Keep an eye on how much formula the puppy is drinking and stop it halfway through the feeding to burp it.

    • 2

Hold the puppy up against your shoulder as you would with a newborn baby. Having a burp cloth or dish towel on your shoulder will keep the mess to a minimum, as the puppy may spit up or drool.

Gently rub your hand on the puppy's back in small circles and pat its back until you hear it burp. Continue in this motion for several minutes until the puppy relaxes, then continue with the feeding. You may want to try burping the puppy once more after the feeding.
