What Do Chi-Pom Dogs Eat?

Chi-Pom dogs are an adorable breed crossing Chihuahuas and Pomeranians. They are also known as Pomchis or Chiranians. These intelligent and friendly dogs make for great pets, but do require some special care due to their smaller, more delicate size. Some attention should be paid to their diet to make sure they are eating suitable food in appropriate portions. A good alternative to buying dog food is making your own at home.
  1. Suitable Foods

    • Double-check with your pet food choices with your vet.

Use the best quality dog food that you can. Many mainstream dog food brands contain too many "fillers" that have no nutritional value. Try to go to an independent pet supply store and look for dog food that is primarily meat-based -- a good dog food brand will have percentages on the label. Both wet and dry food is fine. A good idea is commercially available pre-made frozen patties that use fresh ingredients. You can also find recipes to make your own dog food at home. Puppies do best on food that is specially formulated for them.

    Free-Feeding and Portion Size

    • Don't forget water alongside serving food!

Free-feeding is not a bad option at the puppy stage to avoid hypoglycemia. This means leaving out a bowl of food so it can eat whenever hungry. You need to get smaller sized pieces, or break up pieces if you are using dry dog food. After the first year, two half cup feedings a day is generally sufficient for these dogs. A rule of thumb for finding out your dog's portion size is to see how much food he can eat in 15 minutes and take away the rest. It is best to always follow your vet's recommendation.

    Treats

    • A treat is a treat only if it's once in awhile.

It is is good to watch what kinds of treats you dole out to your Chi-Pom because excessive weight gain can lead to health problems. Treats should be occasional, and not replace meals. Good treats such as pig ears, raw hide or boiled knuckle bones are great for puppies with teeth coming out. It will feel good on their gums and teeth.

    Supplements

    • Supplements are available to ensure your pet's best health and growth. It is easier to get some in powder form for little dogs and mix into whatever food you are feeding them. Bonemeal powder and a vitamin supplement is important.

Bones are important for dental health, but avoid feeding cooked bones, as these can splinter and choke a dog. A great alternative is to ask for turkey or chicken necks from your local butcher and give them raw to your dog.

What Chi-Pom Dogs Should Not Eat

    • Chi-Pom dogs are prone to weight gain. Even a pound over their ideal weight (around 11 pounds, depending) can have significant health consequences. Human food has too much fat and other things not suitable for their digestive system, so resist giving table scraps.

Because these dogs are so small, some food brands may cause excessive weight gain because of too many fillers. Many contain corn, soy, and wheat, which can be allergens for dogs. A good guideline is 60-80% meat. Try combining a premium dog food with 1/2 cup of green beans as a healthy filler.
