What Human Foods Can Puppies Eat?

Human food can be just as healthy for dogs as it is for humans. The problem with feeding a puppy human food is when it develops into a picky eater. Making a home cooked meal for your dog twice a day is not realistic for most people, which is why dry or canned dog food is a simple solution to dog feeding. Puppies can have human food as treats, nutritional supplements or as a regular diet if the owner is willing to keep it up.
  1. Meat/ Fish

    • Dogs are primarily carnivores so most human meats and fish are suitable for their consumption. Dogs can eat raw meats but risk ingesting harmful bacteria. Slightly cooked meats are safer for your dog to eat, especially for puppies who can be vulnerable to bacteria and disease. Dogs can eat beef, chicken, salmon, lamb, tuna and game meats. They can also benefit from eating organ meats like liver, heart and kidney. Puppies should not be given cooked bones or fat trimmings. The bones can splinter and cause injury or become lodged and cause intestinal blockages.

    Vegatables

    • Dogs can eat pretty much any kind of vegetable except for vegetables from the onion family. Dogs enjoy baby carrots, peas, pumpkin, broccoli, green beans, sweet potato, zucchini, cucumber and squash. Vegetables provide dogs with the same important vitamin nutrients that they provide for humans. Crunchy vegetables like carrots and broccoli can also help clean the teeth. You can freeze the vegetables in the summer to give your puppy a refreshing snack.

    Fruit

    • Fruits are a nice sweet treat for puppy, but be careful with how you feed them. Unlike humans, puppies will devour the whole thing. Seeds from watermelon, apples, melons and oranges should be removed as should pits from peaches or plums. Puppies can also eat bananas and wild berries. Smear on some peanut butter to make the fruit treat extra special.

    Grains and Dairy

    • Cooked pasta, oatmeal and rice is a treat for a puppy mixed with meat. It can also help with an upset stomach but grains should be provided sparingly. Plain yogurt with live cultures and cottage cheese can also help the intestinal tract of your puppy. Eggs are a good source of protein but they should be served hard boiled and never raw.
