Dog Treat Recipes That Kids Can Make

You can get your kids involved in taking care of the family dog by showing them how to bake dog treats. Baking your own dog treats is an engaging activity that lets your kids feel good about making something special for their loving pet. Find recipes that are easy enough for kids to make on their own, but keep in mind that you may need to assist them with measuring the ingredients and taking the baking sheets out of the oven safely.
  1. Peanut Butter Treats

    • Peanut butter is a good dog treat flavor, but it is important to make sure that your dog does not have a sensitivity to peanut butter before baking this biscuit. Some dogs get upset stomachs from peanut butter-based treats. To make these simple peanut butter biscuits, you will need 2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 tbsp. of baking powder, 1 cup of smooth, all-natural, unsalted peanut butter --- without added sugar --- 1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of cooked oatmeal. Have your kids preheat the oven to 375 degrees and butter a baking sheet. Mix the ingredients in a bowl until dough begins to form. Then, let the kids roll out the dough and cut it into shapes. Place the shapes onto the greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Make sure you let the treats cool before you feed them to the dog.

    Cinnamon and Chicken Treats

    • To kids, a cinnamon and chicken treat may not sound scrumptious at all, but your dog will find this treat delicious. Cinnamon and chicken treats are easy enough for your kids to make. It simply takes 1 cup flour, 1 cup of unsalted chicken stock, 1/2 cup of oatmeal, 1/4 cup of olive oil, 1 tbsp. of baking powder and 2 tbsp. of cinnamon. As the ingredients combine and become a firm dough, roll it out into a sheet and cut out shapes for the biscuits. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake for 20 minutes.

    Oatmeal Banana Balls

    • Oatmeal banana balls are easy treats to make that your dog will find sweet. Have your kids start by cooking 1 cup of oatmeal. While the oatmeal cools, mash up one large banana in a bowl until it is mushy. Add the cooled oatmeal and mix it around. Kids should use their hands for this part, because they will be able to mix the oatmeal with the mushed banana more effectively with their fingers than a utensil. Have kids roll quarter-size balls out of the mixture and place them on a baking sheet lined with tin foil. The treats go into the freezer until they are frozen. Give your dog the treat while it is cold. Cold dog treats are especially effective for puppies who are teething.

    Tuna Treats

    • Using canned tuna, kids can make tuna treats for dogs. Simply drain two cans of tuna and mash it into a bowl until all of the clumps are out. Add 1 cup of rice flour into the bowl, along with a dash of garlic powder for flavoring. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and pour the tuna mixture into small-sized cupcake tins on a cupcake sheet. Cover the tops with Parmesan cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, cool and serve.

    Noncooking Treats

    • Some dog treats do not even have to be cooked. All it takes is some creativity to figure out the right combination of ingredients to give to your furry friend. Some easy dog treat ideas for kids to make include pigs in a blanket. Simply cut 1-inch pieces of hot dog --- beef or turkey --- and wrap a flour tortilla of equal size around it. Your dog will eat it right up. Another idea is to slice a 2-inch piece of banana, coat it with peanut butter and feed it to your dog.
