Begin feeding your Maltese puppy solid food at 12 weeks. If you're obtaining your puppy from a breeder, find out the brand and kind of dog food he's been eating. It's important to keep him on the same food, as switching could cause stomach upset.
Mix dry kibble with baby food meats or canned dog food if your Maltese doesn't seem to be eating well. Some owners soak the dry kibble in a bit of water to soften it before feeding their puppies. Experts recommend a high-quality puppy and dog food such as Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Merriks or Kirkland. Your dog's food should be hormone-free and contain high-quality grain and no fillers.
Feed your puppy three times a day until he's three months old. After that age, the dog can be fed one cup of food twice a day.
Provide fresh water continuously for your Maltese. Some owners prefer to have their Maltese drink from a hamster-style water bottle (large size) to prevent the long hairs around the mouth from becoming wet.
