How to Make a Puppy Eat New Food

Switching a puppy to a new food is not as easy as pouring it in the puppy's bowl. Puppies get used to certain flavors and textures and may balk at something new. In addition, switching to new food suddenly may cause the puppy digestive problems and is not recommended. New food should be introduced gradually over the course of at least a week, whether you are switching the puppy to adult dog food or are simply changing brands of puppy food.

Instructions

    • 1

Add the new food to the puppy's old food at a ratio of 1 part new food to 3 parts old food for the first two days. In other words, if you are feeding one cup of food to the puppy, ¼ of a cup should be the new food. Blend the new with the old.

    • 2

Increase the amount of new food to a ratio of 1 to 1 for the third and fourth days. If the puppy is not eating enough go back to using the ratio in Step 1 for two more days.

    • 3

Add a ratio of 3 parts new food to 1 part old food for at least two days.

    • 4

Feed the puppy only the new food, and no other kinds of treats or food until he has finished his serving of the new food.
