How to Fatten Up a Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are energetic little dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, they should not weight over six pounds. In many dogs, this requires a carefully monitored diet. But occasionally, Chihuahuas go through periods when they simply refuse to eat. It's known as canine anorexia and can result in serious health problems. Because they are so small, it doesn't take much of a weight loss to cause health problems.

Take the Chihuahua to the veterinarian. Get a full checkup to make sure that there are no underlying medical conditions causing the weight loss. According to Dog Health, parvo virus, kidney and liver disease all begin with a loss of appetite. Additionally, intestinal parasites rob the dog of nutrients and may leave it underweight. Treating the underlying cause of the problem often resolves the weight issue.

Watch the dog during mealtime. If you have a multi-pet home, one dog may be eating all of the food before the Chihuahua can eat its fill. Separate the Chihuahua at mealtime to make sure that it eats a full meal.

    • 3

Switch to canned food. The only difference between canned and dry food is the water content. But the moist food has more aroma. This makes it far more palatable and enticing to the dog.

Heat the canned food before mealtime. The warmth adds to the taste of the dog food. Place the food in a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds until the food is warm to the touch, but not hot.

Talk to your veterinarian. She can prescribe a liquid supplement for the Chihuahua to switch to. Set the liquid out in a dish for the dog to lap up like water, or force-feed it with a small syringe. The high fat, high-protein liquid helps the dog gain healthy weight.
