How to Make Ice Cream Treats for Dogs

Making homemade, nondairy ice cream treats for your dog is easy. The hardest part is keeping your dog from eating it in one bite. Speak to your vet in advance about the ingredients you plan to use, and then get to work. While most ice cream dog treats call for using yogurt as a base, you can omit it if you choose and still come away with fluffy, creamy and rich ice cream snacks for your pet.

    • 1

Purchase some plain or vanilla yogurt at your local grocery store, put 1 cup in a bowl and set aside. Ask your veterinarian in advance if yogurt is OK as an occasional treat for your pet. While dairy is usually not a good idea, yogurt has lower calcium than regular ice cream or milk and can provide a rich and creamy base for your homemade dog treat.

Take one to two mashed bananas, and add it to your yogurt base. If you are concerned about giving your dog dairy, omit the yogurt altogether, and freeze the bananas instead. Place the frozen bananas in a food processor, and whip them for about five minutes or until extra fluffy and creamy. They will be cold and offer a wonderful ice cream consistency.

Add 2 tbsp. of plain peanut butter to your recipe for a boost of sweetness and protein. Most dogs enjoy peanut butter, and your homemade treats are sure to be a hit. Try an all natural or no-stir, organic peanut butter to avoid hydrogenated oils and excess sugars and chemicals.

Add honey to your dog's new favorite treat.

Drizzle in 2 tbsp. of raw honey over your creation and then mix together thoroughly. The natural honey will add enhanced sweetness to the treat and complement the peanut butter and bananas.

Scoop up your new ice cream treats for dogs into a few small bowls or into one large plastic container. Cover the ice cream, and put it into the freezer until hard. Before serving your dog, take it out for about five or 10 minutes until it's soft enough to eat.
