Read food labels. Similar to those on human food, labels on dog food packages and cans contain nutritional information and list the ingredients, vitamins and minerals that are found in the food. When it comes to reading food labels, you must be aware that the first ingredient is the prevalent ingredient, and the subsequent food items are listed in order of their amounts. The ingredient that is least found in the dog food will be listed last.
Look for protein, which is what your dog needs more than any other ingredient. In high quality dog food, protein is listed first, or followed by a meal. It may be that the label says duck or duck meal, and both are okay for your pet. Understand the different grades of proteins. For instance, byproducts are not as desirable as the whole protein or protein meal.
Beware of fillers. Dog food that lists corn or soy as a main ingredient. These are fillers commonly added to dog food, but they are unhealthy for your dog to consume and some dogs may be allergic. If water is the main ingredient, then that, too, is being used as a filler, when really the food should consist of mainly protein.
Check labels for good fats, such as Omega-3 oils, that can help your dog's skin and coat. Avoid vegetable fats, poultry fats and mineral oil.
Rule out dog foods that have artificial flavorings and added sugars, such as corn syrup. These products serve no nutritional value for your dog and can be disadvantageous to its health.
Review the reviews. After you have selected a dog food brand that passes the healthy test, go to the dog food manufacturer's website and read what others have to say about it. Shy away from foods that get bad reviews.
Consider who the manufacturers are when reviewing dog food. Try to do research on them to find out if they have been sued before for false advertising, hiding certain ingredients or if some dogs have died while using their food products. You do not want your furry friend to become a potential statistic.
Make a final decision in the best interest of your dog. Keep in mind that high quality dog foods will be more expensive than ones that contain low-grade ingredients.
