How to Cook for A Maltese Dog

Cook your Maltese dog delicious and healthy meals from your very own kitchen. Manufactured dog food contains preservatives and fillers that are not particularly nutritious for your animal, and Maltese dogs are sometimes allergic to store bought dog food. Home-cooked meals are a way to show your dog that you care about its health and happiness. Meals do not have to be complicated to be full of nutrients and flavors that your Maltese will enjoy.

      Cook a protein source to include in your Maltese's meal. Good sources of protein include beef, chicken, lamb, pork, turkey or game animals. Use organ meat if you have it available, such as chicken livers or hearts. Protein can be boiled, baked, braised or sauteed. Do not use spices or herbs, as they may irritate your Maltese's stomach.

      Cook a carbohydrate source such as brown rice, whole wheat pasta or oats to add to the protein. Cook vegetables to add to the food mixture as well. Maltese dogs enjoy zucchini, green beans, broccoli, carrots and many other vegetables. Experiment with your dog to find out what it likes. Saute, roast or boil the vegetables in water.

      Cook legumes, such as beans or peas, to add to the mixture. The ratio of the finished dog food should be approximately 40 to 50 percent protein, 25 to 35 percent vegetables and 25 to 35 percent grains and carbohydrates. Cook enough food for one to two meals and refrigerate the rest for the next day.

      Feed a Maltese puppy daily one and a half ounces of food for every pound that it weighs. The daily amount of food your dog needs varies, depending on the age, size and activity level of your dog. Adult Maltese dogs, for example, should only be fed one meal per day, while growing Maltese puppies need to be fed multiple times each day. It is best to consult with your veterinarian about the amount of food to serve daily.
