How to Store Dog Food in Galvanized Steel

If you have a problem with pests trying to eat your dog's food, or if you have dogs that try to get into your dog food, plastic containers and dog food bags aren't suitable storage options. Galvanized steel containers may be a better choice because they make it difficult, if not impossible, for pests and dogs to chew their way through to the food. Preparing the container and properly storing the dog food ensures that your dog food stays as fresh as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the galvanized steel container thoroughly with warm water and dish detergent. Be sure to wash the lid, too. Rinse the container well and allow it to dry before proceeding.

    • 2

Pour the dog food into the galvanized steel container. Leave at least an inch from the top of the dog food to the top of the container. This makes it easy to scoop dog food out of the container without making a mess. If you plan on storing a dog food scoop in the container, leave sufficient room for it.

    • 3

Secure the lid on the galvanized steel container. Be sure that it is closed all the way, or the food may get stale quickly. In addition, if the lid isn't secure, pests may crawl into the container, or your dog may knock the lid off and get to the food.

Write the expiration date of the dog food on the outside of the galvanized steel container so you know when to replace the food. Masking tape and a permanent marker are ideal for this.
