How to Nurse a 4-5 Week Old Puppy

Puppies are undoubtedly adorable; but they're also living creatures that need help surviving. If everything goes well, the necessary elements for survival will be provided by the mother. However, many puppies may become orphaned, meaning that their mother abandons them for one reason or another. If this is the case, you may have to take nursing the puppy into your own hands. While there are two basic methods: tube feeding and bottle feeding, you should only attempt the former if you're an experienced professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry a baby bottle thoroughly. Make sure to sanitize the nipple, as well.

    • 2

Fill the bottle with the correct mixture of puppy milk replacer and water. Shake the mixture vigorously to ensure that the powder has been dissolved.

    • 3

Warm the formula up to room temperature.

    • 4

Lay the puppy on its stomach and put the nipple of the bottle into the puppy's mouth. Never lay a puppy on its back while it feeds.

    • 5

Put the puppy over your shoulder and pat it lightly on its back to encourage burping.

    • 6

Feed the puppy every eight hours, or as necessary. Consult the directions on the puppy milk replacer for specific directions, based on your puppy's weight and age.
