Dangerous Fruits & Vegetables for Canines

Many dog owners feed their pets table scraps as a treat. Puppies often get into food sources they shouldn't, such as the garbage can, pantry and even the refrigerator. Most human food is safe for dogs in small quantities, but there are a few fruits and vegetables that are toxic to dogs.
  1. Citrus Fruits

    • Citrus fruits, including oranges, lemons and grapefruit, can cause vomiting in dogs. Avoid citrus extracts as well. If you use citrus oils as flavorings or for aromatherapy, store them well out of reach of your dog. Some insecticides and cleaning products also contain citrus oils. If your dog is exposed to citrus oils through the skin, bathe the dog in warm water and mild dish soap. If the citrus fruit or oil is ingested, contact your veterinarian immediately.

    Grapes and Raisins

    • Veterinarians do not know exactly what substance is toxic in grapes and raisins, but they do know that ingestion of as little as 0.33 oz. of grapes or 0.05 oz. of raisins per pound of body weight can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Large quantities can lead to kidney failure. If your dog has eaten grapes or raisins, induce vomiting and call your veterinarian immediately.

    Onions and Garlic

    • Onions and garlic contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can cause anemia in dogs. Avoid feeding table scraps seasoned with onion or garlic powder. Some baby foods contain onion powder. Read the labels before giving your dog any processed foods that could contain these flavorings.

    Potatoes, Rhubarb and Tomatoes

    • Potatoes, rhubarb and tomatoes all contain oxalates, which are toxic to your dog's nervous system. They are also harmful to the digestive and urinary systems. The leaves and stems of tomato and rhubarb plants also contain oxalates, so be sure to supervise your dog if he is near your garden.

    Avocados

    • Avocados contain a substance called persin, which induces vomiting and diarrhea in dogs. Persin is found in all parts of the avocado plant, including the leaves, bark and fruit.
