How to Feed a Samoyed

The Samoyed is not as hearty an eater as most breeds similar in size. Their light appetite can be attributed to the scarcity of food in the arctic climate of northwestern Siberia---the Samoyed's native land. The Samoyed can actually survive without eating for several days in this type of climate. Most Samoyeds can be portion-fed, but this can vary depending on size, age, metabolism and activity level.

Determine how you want to feed your Samoyed. Commercial dry food is convenient and has a long shelf life. Canned food has more flavor than commercial food but is mostly water. Raw food diets are also a healthy option for Samoyed but can be expensive.

Choose dog food for your Samoyed. Premium brands of dog food are recommended because the dog can be fed less and still get adequate nourishment. Typically, the first ingredient of dog food is a specific meat --- chicken, lamb or beef. Avoid dog foods which list unspecified meat --- which could be anything --- as the primary ingredient.

Give your Samoyed clean water -- available at all times -- and replenish it regularly. There is not a fixed amount of water that Samoyeds can drink daily. This depends on the dog's diet, temperature and how much he exercises.

Feed the Samoyed twice per day. Divide the suggested amount on the label of your dog food into two meals. Space feeding times eight to twelve hours apart. Limit treats to healthy small doses.
