How to Make Homemade Low-Calorie Dog Food

When your dog starts showing signs of obesity, it's time to watch his calories. Creating a low-calorie dog food depends entirely on you--the hand that feeds him. Your dog likely will eat whatever you put in front of him, although sometimes begrudgingly. By making the effort to create healthy food he'll enjoy--including baking low-calorie treats--your dog might even be able to jump on your lap again.

Instructions

  1. Dog Food

    • 1

Cook the stew meat in a saucepan or bake it. You also could use a lean roast. Be sure to drain off the fat.

    • 2

Chop the broccoli, barley, zucchini, non-fat cottage cheese and Berte's Digestion Blend.

    • 3

Mix all the ingredients together and serve it to your dog. Consult with your veterinarian to determine correct portions.

    Dog Treats

    • 4

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 5

Pour water and oil into the bowl. Stir all the rest of the ingredients in until the mixture is thoroughly blended.

    • 6

Sprinkle a light layer of flour onto a flat surface. Fold the dough onto the surface; knead if for 3 minutes or until the treats are at the desired consistency.

    • 7

Flatten the dough with a rolling pin into a 1/4-inch thick sheet. Cut the shapes out with a cookie cutter or design your own with a knife. Put them on the cookie sheet.

    • 8

Bake the doggie treats for 30 minutes. Cool them off on a wire cooler before you serve your dog.
