How to Dehydrate Chicken in the Oven for Dog Treats

Dehydrated chicken jerky is available in pet food stores as treats for dogs, but you can save some money by making it it yourself. Making your own also gives the added bonus that you know exactly what went into it. Some pet store brands of chicken jerky come from China, where laws regarding food are not as strict as in the United States. While it's easier to make the jerky using a dehydrator, you can use an oven.

Instructions

    • 1

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • 2

Clear the area where you will be working, and put down a cutting board. A plastic cutting board is best because it is easy to sanitize afterward.

    • 3

Place the chicken breast on the cutting board, skin side up. Hold your knife in one hand and use your other hand to grab the edge of the skin.

    • 4

Remove the skin by peeling it back as you slice between the skin and the meat. Discard the skin.

    • 5

Slice the meat into strips about 1/4 inch thick and brush them with olive oil to prevent them from sticking. Arrange the slices on a cookie sheet so that they are not touching.

    • 6

Bake until they are dry and firm. This usually takes around 20 minutes.

    • 7

Wash your hands in hot, soapy water. Also wash the cutting board, knife, cookie sheet, and any other material that came in contact with the raw chicken.
