How to Increase the Fiber in a Dog's Diet

Dogs who suffer from obesity, digestive issues or constipation can benefit from adding fiber to their diet. Commercial dog food may not have enough fiber to meet your dog's needs; as a result, your dog may be dealing with weight or stomach problems. Fortunately, adding fiber to your dog's diet is easy and you probably already have the required foods in your home. Talk to your veterinarian before adding anything new to your dog's diet.

Try several fiber supplements to determine which options your dog will tolerate. Taste varies between dogs so try out one new method each day until you find one, or several, that work for your dog.

    • 2

Add the bran to your dog's food. Mix thoroughly so that it can't taste the bran. Some dogs will like the taste while others will not.

    • 3

Give your dog pieces of carrot, green beans or broccoli as a snack each day. Break the vegetable into bite-size pieces and hand them to your dog. Be enthusiastic and positive about the treat, just as you would a biscuit.

Pulverize the vegetables in your food processor and mix the ground veggies into your dog's food. This technique works well for dogs that don't like eating vegetables or for those with stomach issues. Grinding up the veggies will make them easier to digest and easier to disguise in a bowl of dog food.

Add 1 tbsp canned pumpkin to your dog's dinner. Mix it thoroughly into his regular food. Be sure to use plain, pureed pumpkin, not pumpkin pie mix.

Add fiber to your dog's diet gradually. Start with a smaller amount and gradually increase the dosage over seven days.
