DIY: Automatic Dog Feeder

An automatic dog feeder makes life easier for dog owners on the go. You can purchase an expensive mechanized feeder from the pet store, or you can build your own feeder that works with gravity. A DIY automatic dog feeder is inexpensive, easy to construct and just as effective as the more expensive versions. You can provide your dog with plenty of food while you are at work during the day or while you are out of town for several days.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the top of the bottle with the scissors so that it rests flat on the cut edges. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid to the bottle and fill it with warm water. Scrub the inside of the bottle with the sponge and rinse it out. Leave the bottle upside down to dry.

    • 2

Cut a 2-by-2-inch square hole in the side of the plastic bottle, using the cut edge as the bottom of the square. This small hole will serve as the door through which food will fall as your dog eats it.

    • 3

Cut away half of the surface of the old bottom of the bottle so you can fill the bottle with dog food.

    • 4

Apply hot glue to the new bottom of the plastic bottle, which is the end with the square hole. Press the glued side firmly into the shallow dog dish and hold it there for 30 seconds, applying steady pressure. Leave the bottle to dry overnight.

    • 5

Fill the bottle with dog food. Some of the dog food will fall through the hole into the dish until the dish is full. As the dog eats the food, more food will fall through the hole, automatically filling the bowl.
