What Can I Feed My Dog That Has No Protein in It?

Although protein should be a large part of a healthy dog's diet, your dog can eat things like grains, vegetables and fruits.
  1. Grains

    • Almost any carbohydrate is safe to feed your dog. Sticking to whole grains like oatmeal, polenta, cornmeal and whole wheat is a healthier option.

    Vegetables

    • Although a carnivore, your dog can digest and absorb nutrients from vegetable sources. Almost any vegetable is acceptable, but be sure to avoid onions, garlic and avocados as they can pose health threats.

    Fruits

    • Fruits, such as blueberries, are excellent sources of antioxidants and vitamins. They should be fed to your dog sparingly, however, as they don't provide the essential nutrition a dog needs. Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs.

    Misconceptions

    • Dogs are classified as non-obligate carnivores. This means that they can digest grains and vegetables, but their primary and biologically preferred food source is protein.

    Dog Diets

    • According to Drs. Foster and Smith, in the wild, carbohydrates wouldn't make up anywhere near 30 percent of a dog's diet. But dry dog foods and most natural diets can include anywhere from 30 to 70 percent carbohydrates. While vegetables and carbohydrates are not dangerous to your dog, they should be given in moderation.
