Yogurt
-
Yogurt is a fermented dairy product containing organisms that improve the regularity of bowel movements. Mix one to three spoonfuls of these bacteria-friendly yogurts into your dog's food at each meal. However, not all yogurts are created equally. Buy varieties that contain live, active cultures to achieve optimal results with your animal. Only use plain yogurt; the flavored blends contain too much sugar for a dog. Avoid any brand containing artificial sweeteners, as these sugar substitutes are harmful to animals. Yogurt is helpful to maintain good digestive health in a dog, but will not be effective in treating diarrhea or vomiting. These symptoms warrant a visit to a veterinarian.
Cottage Cheese
-
Cottage cheese contains natural and supplemental probiotics. Read the labels carefully to ensure you are buying a product with L. acidophilus or B. bifidus. Veterinarians often recommend cottage cheese and rice for dogs with queasy stomachs. Prepare the rice without any added oils or fats. Enhance this concoction of cottage cheese and rice with boiled chicken or hamburger, or substitute unflavored oatmeal for the rice. Add one to three spoonfuls of plain yogurt that does not contain artificial sweeteners, but check the carton to confirm that the brand has probiotics. Continue mixing spoonfuls of cottage cheese into your dog’s meals after he recovers from the bout of intestinal distress.
Supplements
-
Probiotics are sold as supplements for both humans and animals. You can share your own supplements with your dog and avoid spending the extra money on animal brands, according to Bravo Raw Diet. Use one capsule daily for your pooch by twisting open the capsule and pouring the contents onto your pet’s food. When you purchase these human supplements, look for acidophilus mixtures with at least one of the following ingredients: L. Acidophilus, L. Bulgaricus, B. Bifidum and B. Longum. Some probiotic supplements are sold in the refrigerated sections of stores; keep these products in your refrigerator at home to preserve the freshness.

Human Probiotics for Dogs
Probiotics are as beneficial to a dog’s digestive system as they are to his owner’s health. These friendly bacteria promote regularity throughout the intestinal tract. Dogs are especially vulnerable to gastro-intestinal troubles because canines typically devour anything they find on the ground, which may include toxins. Some pet foods are supplemented with probiotics, but you may also share human foods with your pet that are enhanced with these living microorganisms.
