How to Add Oil to Dog Foods

You may add human food, such as meat or gravy, onto your dog's food if the dog won't eat his solid dog food. A healthy way to get a dog to eat his food is to add oil to the food. Adding olive oil or sesame oil to your dog's food can improve the dog's skin and help your dog achieve a fuller coat. Pouring fish oils, such as cod liver oil, onto your dog's food can help ease your dog's joint pain as well as improve the dog's vision and immune system.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your dog's bowl on a table, counter or other area out of reach for the dog. This will prevent the dog from eating his food before you've added the oil.

    • 2

Add the dog's food into the bowl as you normally would.

    • 3

Distribute the oil evenly over your dog's food. According to the Healthy Oil Planet website, you should pour 1/4 tsp. of oil onto the food if the dog is 20 pounds or under, 1/2 tsp. of oil if the dog is between 20 and 55 pounds and one tsp. of oil if the dog is 55 pounds or over.

    • 4

Mix the food and the oil together with a spoon or similar utensil. Mix the items for approximately 30 seconds and serve to your dog.
