How to Make Homemade Dog Food With Liver

All dog owners want their beloved pet to be as healthy, happy, and active as possible. This can mean taking the little four-legged friend on a daily walk, giving it tick and flea medications, and feeding it homemade dog food and treats. Meats such as beef, chicken, and liver are crucial components of any dog's daily menu. Liver offers your dog much-needed calcium, iron, and folic acid, which will help strengthen bones and prevent anemia.

Instructions

  1. Liver Dog Food

    • 1

Cut 2/3 cup liver into bite-sized pieces with a sharp knife.

    • 2

Peel and cut one small potato and one medium-sized carrot into bite-sized pieces.

    • 3

Place the liver, potato, and carrot pieces into an eight-quart pot with one cup water and 1/4 tsp garlic powder.

    • 4

Bring the contents of the pot to a boil. Once the ingredients are boiling vigorously, turn the heat down to low and allow the contents to simmer for several minutes.

    • 5

Place 1/2 cup instant rice and 1/2 cup water into a microwave-safe bowl. Cook the rice in the microwave on high for 5 to 7 minutes, or until tender.

    • 6

Pour the rice into the pot, stir, and allow the contents to simmer 5 minutes longer.

    • 7

Remove the pot from the stove and allow the contents to cool.

    Liver Treats

    • 8

Turn an oven to 350 degrees. Pour 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1/2 cup dry milk and one tsp honey into a bowl and stir the ingredients.

    • 9

Place a five ounce piece of liver into a small baking pan. Bake the liver at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 170 degrees. Allow the liver to cool completely

    • 10

Cut the liver into very small pieces with a sharp knife. Add the liver to the bowl and combine all the ingredients.

    • 11

Mold 1/4 cup of the liver mixture into a ball with your hands and place the ball onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Repeat with the remaining mixture.

    • 12

Flatten each ball with a fork and bake the liver treats for 8 to 10 minutes. Allow the treats to cool completely before giving them to the dog. Store the remainder in the refrigerator for up to two days, placing them in a sealed container.
