How to Feed to Eliminate Diarrhea in Dogs

If your dog suddenly has a bad case of diarrhea, chances are it has something to do with its diet. Some simple changes to your pooch's daily food regimen will usually take care of soft or watery stool without the need for medicine. The key is first to stop the diarrhea, and then figure out what is causing your puppy's upset stomach through the process of elimination, in order to avoid the same problem from happening in the future.

Instructions

    • 1

Stop feeding your dog for 24 hours. You need to clear out its system so whatever is causing the diarrhea goes away.

    • 2

Allow your dog to drink as much water as it wants during this time. You can add probiotic powder or an electrolyte-replenishing formula to the dog's water if you like, though this is not necessary.

    • 3

Feed the dog a bland diet of smashed-up high-fiber fruits and vegetables like pumpkin to help stimulate digestion and clear out its belly. You can also feed your dog small portions of boiled rice and skinless chicken once every four hours.

    • 4

Monitor the dog's condition. If it starts feeling better, add one quarter of its normal amount of dog food to its bland diet after two days. Slowly decrease the bland diet and increase the amount of dog food over about a week until the dog is eating its normal amount of regular dog food.

Call the vet if the dog does not start feeling better after two days of water and bland food.
