Homemade Lamb Treats

Dog ownership in the United States is extremely popular, to the tune of Americans spending more than $39 million annually in dog food sales. Making homemade dog food is on the rise. Homemade dog treats are not only cost-effective but reassure dog lovers that their pets are eating healthy. Lamb treats are especially good for dogs since lamb meat is naturally lean in fat, high in vitamin B, zinc and iron. Lamb meat has zero carbohydrates with little or no marbling. Lamb treat recipes are easy to follow, contain few ingredients and require small amounts of prep time.
  1. Basic Lamb Treat Know-How

    • Beginning with a basic dog food treat recipe will lead the average cook to creating variations that cater to their dog. Start with 1 lb. of fresh lamb meat. Grind the meat using a food processor or blender. Add to the meat 1 to 2 cups of flour. Moisten the mix with an egg or chicken broth. Seasonings of garlic and salt will add flavor to the treats. Fill a greased baking dish 1/4 to 1/2 inches in depth with the mix and bake at 375 degrees until the middle is still red. Let the mix finish cooking until brown in color with the oven off. Cool and slice the treats into bars. Refrigerate the bars until used in a zip-lock bag.

    Ingredient Variations

    • Substitutions to the basic lamb treat recipe are corn meal muffin mix, oatmeal, whole wheat flour or rice flour. Liquid substitutes are beef broth, rice milk, vegetable stock or apple sauce. Instead of a baking pan, use a muffin tin for baking or use cookie cutters to create shaped treats.
