How to Feed a Mini Schnauzer

Mini schnauzers, more commonly known as miniature schnauzers, are bold little dogs that make great companions and family pets, and generally get along well with other pets in the household. Mini schnauzers are prone to some serious health conditions, like kidney stones, diabetes and pancreatitis, all of which can be worsened by poor dietary habits. Every dog's dietary needs are different, but there are basic feeding rules that, if adhered to, can contribute to the good health and long life of your mini schnauzer.

Instructions

Choose a food for your mini schnauzer that mimics the natural ingredients the dog would find in her natural habitat. Meat should be labeled in the top five ingredients on the dog food label. All natural foods without added preservatives may be more expensive, but they are also healthier for your dog, which may result in less frequent visits to the veterinarian because of health problems created by improper diet.

Feed miniature schnauzers twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, for example. An established feeding routine is important to ensure your dog's digestive system remains regular.

    • 3

Soften dry food with a small amount of water before feeding to make the food more digestible. This is especially important with a new puppy making the adjustment from breast milk to dry food, as his soft teeth are still developing and it may be difficult for him to chew unsoftened food. As your dog ages, you may cut back on how much water you add to the food to help him strengthen his teeth.

    • 4

Moderate how often you give your dogs treats, especially dried, carbohydrate-packed dog treats. It's okay to reward your dog with treats, but you can give her natural snacks, as well, like chunks of cut up apple, celery and carrots. You still need to moderate natural snacks, as mini schnauzers are prone to overeating, and the extra carbohydrates in snack foods could lead to canine diabetes.

Limit table-scrap feeding. Most table scraps are high in fat, sugar, cholesterol and carbohydrates. Miniature schnauzers have a tendency to gain weight if they overeat, which leads to many of the health problems these dogs might face as they age.
