Choose the type of dog food. One advantage to wet dog food is that it is highly concentrated, which gives your dog a full meal without the "bulk" that is contained in dry food. It also does not have as much filler as dry dog food has, which makes wet food more nutritious. Wet food, despite its advantages, is usually more expensive because of how it's packaged and also does not promote healthy teeth as well as dry food does. On the other hand, if you buy a high quality dry food, it will supply your dog with the same quality of nutrients as wet dog food. Dry food also has a longer shelf life.

Choose the brand of dog food. This is probably the most important step. The cheaper the dog food, the more likely it is that it is not the most nutritious for your dog. Do research and look at different reviews (see Resources).

Feed your dog. Puppies should be given a smaller portion size than adult dogs. Give your dog the same portion size each day. The more energy your dog uses, the more energy he needs from food. But make sure to not overfeed your dog. Also make sure to provide fresh water every day for your dog.
