Is it Harmful to Feed Dogs Cat Food?

A loving pet owner may want to give his dog everything it desires. While cat food can be enticing to dogs, it is not good for their health in the long run.
  1. Significance

    • Dog food is formulated to meet the exact nutritional needs of dogs. Cat food is similarly formulated, but meets the nutritional needs of cats. Cats and dogs need different vitamins and nutrients.

    Effects

    • Cat food is higher in protein and fat than dog food. Short-term effects outlined in "Nutrition for Veterinary Technicians and Nurses" by Ann Wortinger include diarrhea and upset stomachs. Nutritional deficiencies can develop over time. In rare cases, an inflammation of the pancreas, called pancreatitis, may occur.

    Solution

    • Feed your dog foods that are formulated for dogs. Your dog may have different nutritional needs based upon her weight, age, overall health and activity level. Speak to a veterinarian for advice on feeding your dog.

    Considerations

    • Cat food will not harm your dog if he accidentally ingests it. It is not overtly harmful and the likely result will be a stomach ache, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

    Fun Fact

    • Just as dogs should not be fed cat food, cats should not be fed dog food. Dog food lacks taurine, which can lead to blindness in cats over a long period of time, according to "Clinical Textbook For Veterinary Technicians" by Joanna Bassert and Dennis McCurnin.
